(Apr. 26, 2017) Anosognosia, often called lack of insight, is one of the Treatment Advocacy Center’s key issues and one of the greatest barriers to treatment of severe mental illness. When an individual suffers from anosognosia, refusing treatment appears rational, no matter how clear the need for treatment might be to others.
Our anosognosia page offers helpful information related to this key issue, including recent news and research, such as an anosognosia background paper.
Improving access to treatment for people too ill to seek help, including involuntary treatment when legal criteria are met, is one of the ways the Treatment Advocacy Center is working to fix the mental health system.
