The Preventable Tragedies Database is the most thorough public accounting of the role of mental illness among victims and perpetrators of violent acts in the United States. The database is compiled using automated Internet queries and manual research of news articles and other online resources.
INSTRUCTIONS: To search the Preventable Tragedies Database, please first choose between the lead SMI person involved in the tragedy or all others involved. The Preventable Tragedies Database may be searched by keyword and/or by specific factors. Records are returned in reverse chronological order with the most recent appearing first.
Because no comparable government database exists, and tragic incidents must be reported publicly and include a reference to mental illness before they can be identified, the Preventable Tragedies Database is inevitably incomplete. This is particularly true with regard to suicide, which is not widely reported by the media.
