(Sept. 12, 2016) It began more than three years ago, with an open letter to the US Congress calling for a national assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) demonstration project. That began the conversation, and it was the hard work of individuals across the country that made it a reality.
TAC’s supporters joined us in countless meetings with Members of Congress. Wrote letters to appropriators, making sure this program didn't slip through the cracks during negotiations. And kept the pressure on in social media, amplifying our message and demanding action.
Recently, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the 17 communities that would be receiving the first-ever federal AOT demonstration grant awards. The awardees include localities all across the nation, from Mobile, Alabama, to Chicago, Illinois, Ventura, California and Cheyenne, Wyoming. Each award represents an opportunity — a chance to finally ensure effective treatment for the most severely ill.
We’re grateful to all who took action. If you’re interested in advocating to make treatment available to more people, sign up to receive Action Alerts and make your voice heard!
